If homeowner replaced roof and 7yrs later there is water damage and leaking, will insurance cover it?

When we first bought the house the roof was bad. We replaced the roof, then shingled, with a metal roof. Now, 7yrs later, we are having leaking problems( Currently unsure of cause) My question is, because we as the home owners are and were not licensed roofers, will any damage be covered under our homeowners policy? I know each policy is different, just in general is the homeowner allowed to do repairs like this and they be covered
