Is a furnace vent pipe a lot cooler than a chimney vent pipe coming out of the roof?

We put some rubber roof seam membrane material on the seam between our vent and vent cover. I was concerned about it getting hot in the winter but it is the vent from a propane furnace. I am thinking it maybe does not get nearly as hot as a wood burning stove pipe would.
