I received money from my landlord for a damage claim, does he get to take my personal belongings claimed?

I submitted a claim to the real estate company that I rent from for the roof leaking in my sun room and it ruining my personal belongings (like chair, table, etc). Today the building manager brought me a check for the amount I claimed and said he was going to take the stuff I claimed since he paid me for the items. He said the real estate company is making him pay me because it was his fault he didn't have me take my things out of my room. Does the building manager really get to take those belongings?
